Senior Resources of Broomfield Inc.
"In the beginning…….."

Senior Resources of Broomfield Inc. (SRB) is a 501c3 non-profit organization established in 1982 to address the needs of Broomfield's older adults and their families. Initially board members helped to bring HUD housing for the elderly and disabled to Broomfield. Their original name was Broomfield Senior Housing, Inc.

Charter board members realized that housing was only the first of many senior services needed in the community. And so they changed their name to Senior Resources of Broomfield Inc. The name was selected to reflect that they would need to develop new resources for seniors, and that they would encourage seniors to utilize their resources and skills through volunteer work to help establish new programs.

Thanks to a grass roots effort by citizens and board members, in 1984 a van was donated and a driver hired to provide transportation for older adults.

From the beginning, SRB Board members kept City officials and staff updated on their progress, and aware of the needs of seniors which would have to be addressed in the near future. In 1991, thanks top a bond issue publicly supported by Senior Resources, and eventually passed, the City built the senior center. The SRB Board of Directors, Executive Director, and senior volunteers solicited the help of people in the community and raised over $200,000 to furnish the facility.

Through 1999, both the City and SRB worked together in a unique partnership to create and provide a variety of services and programs for older adults in Broomfield. The City provided staff which supervised the day-to-day operations, provided administrative staff, planned recreation programs, provided community resource services and outreach, and operated a door-to-door transportation program, now called Easy Ride. SRB was fiscally responsible for the FOCUS newsletter, Meals on Wheels, and the Lakeshore Café lunch programs, a cultural Diversity arts program, and the Volunteer Respite Care and Chore Services program.

In 2000 the City of Broomfield assumed fiscal responsibility for all of the senior services programs and spent over $600,000 to provide senior programs and maintenance of the facility. In 2001 the City's Recreation Division accepted the responsibility for providing computer classes, trips, special; events, arts and crafts, drop in activities and fitness classes for seniors.

The senior center staff and over 70 community volunteers completed a thorough organizational assessment in 2000, and Broomfield became the 44th nationally accredited senior center in the county, and the first in the state of Colorado.

Today, Senior Resources of Broomfield Inc. has many goals. It acts as an advocate for senior issues, and selects projects to support financially. SRB also continues its important role as a launching pad for new projects, identifying senior needs, and developing long range planning to fill those needs.

Throughout the history of SRB, volunteer involvement has been the cornerstone of our success and will continue to play a critical role in our future.
